I have the honor to enclose for Your Lordship's information, extract of Your Lordship's letter to me of 17 June, 1848, together with extract of a reply which I have caused to be sent to Mr. Hulme, on the subject of the payment of his full salary.

Your Lordship will observe that pending further instructions, I have caused Mr. Hulme to be paid his full salary, to which I have been principally induced by finding that while in England he has been receiving that amount, and in fact been paid at that rate up to the 1st of May last, at which time it must have been known...
